My name is Mildred Gomes and I am from Dhaka, Bangladesh. Bangladesh is located in South East Asia. Many people have not heard about my country. My country is very small and overpopulated but a wide range of people assume that I am from India, a neighboring country. Since Bangladesh is a relatively small country in South East Asia, the climate is hot and humid. The winter season doesn't precipitate snow. So from my early childhood, snow for me and my family was a mere idea. It didn't seem real, I only thought that it was a fairy-tale with snowman and ice-skating and Christmas. But after immigrating to the United States of America and experiencing my first snowfall was surreal, out of the world. It made me realize that it was not a fairy-tale and not a figment of imagination. Thus I started to develop a fascination with snow and very cold weather in the winter season. Which is why I chose Antarctica as my origin for my research project. I wanted to learn mire about the weather, their habitat, and how they are in danger. Animals and pets have also been a passionate topic of mine, but my parents have never allowed me to have pets.
When I had the choice to choose a topic for my research project, my first thought was to pick a topic that included animals. But it was hard to find something within Australia or Africa, since it is a continent and a very popular country to write about. So I chose one of the coldest place in the earth and combined my love of animals and my favorite season.
However, picking this topic (climate change affecting penguins in Antarctica) showed to be another hardship. Our researching sources had to be recent, at most 6-7 months old, and there were minimum sources within that time range. So I had to push the range further back to collect all of my research and data.
Even though I had difficulty collecting data, my topic came out to be very interesting. this topic has made me learn new things about the affect of climate change that I've never heard before. Such as some penguin species are being positively affected by the climate change rather than the major negative affects that are life threatening. Another thing I learned was that there are plant life in Antarctica that are also being equally affected by the change in climate like the animals.
I liked to do this project even though it was time consuming, it taught me a lot.
